Diaper Duty

So, I changed my first diaper today and it was terrifying. First of all, she still has wires running everywhere and I am terrified of knocking one off, but mostly because the procedure for changing a diaper for a baby in an isolette (incubator) looks a lot like diffusing a bomb. Each isolette has two "holes" on each side that you put your hands through to touch the baby and its through these that you must manage the diaper change. Sydney likes to up the difficulty factor by squirming wildly while you change her diaper, which is great because it is something that all babies do and not just tiny little headstrong preemies. And for those of you keeping score at home (mostly Aaron), the diaper count is 2-1 for Aaron and me.

People keep asking us if we are ready for her to come home and I think they mostly mean do we have a car seat or do we have the nursery done. We answer yes along that vein anyway because the answer to whether we are ready to care for her on our own yet is no. We were preparing to have a fully gestated human of the variety our friends and family brought home. So the thought of bringing home a little 5 pound human that has spent her entire life to that point being cared for by health care professionals and her every function monitored by special machines is daunting at best. We often jokingly ask the nurses what one of "these" setups would cost for home. However, the vision of her little self sleeping peacefully in the house we love, the room we decorated, in the bed we chose, makes my heart ache. Plus Aaron and I will get to spend lots of quality time together watching her breathe with one of those tiny mirrors.

Good news, the trend has reversed and she has started to gain weight. Her current weight is 1390 grams (thrilled that my weight is not measured in grams). She has a cranial utrasound scheduled for tomorrow to make sure that she doesn't have any bleeding on her brain. She also has a birthday!!! One week.
